First Saturday Community Work Days, held from 8am-12pm, are a Ka Papa Loʻi ʻo Kānewai tradition going back to 1980 and the revitalization of the current taro patch. First Saturdays are open to anyone in the community looking for an opportunity to experience traditional farming methods, converse with Hawaiian Language speakers, talk story with practitioners, ku‘i ‘ai, ku‘i ka imu, and enjoy the day with family and friends. No reservations are required. The lo‘i will provide light refreshments for volunteers to enjoy. Prior to starting any volunteer work, individuals must submit the appropriate Assumption of Risk and Release (ARR) form.
Learn about permaculture design and organic growing practices every Saturday from 9 am-2 pm at Kolea Farm in the North Shore. Plant local produce and trees, maintain existing permaculture systems, and harvest and learn about organic farming through community involvement. Mini food prep workshop at the end. Join the North Shore Community Land Trust for our community workdays to mālama this special place on the second Saturday of each month from 9 am-noon at the Kahuku side of the Turtle Bay Resort parking lot, near the Paradise Helicopters helipad - meet by 9 a.m. A guide will lead volunteers on a coastal hike of about one mile to Kalaeokaunaʻoa (~20 minutes).Restoration activities include invasive species removal, native out-planting, and other dune restoration activities for a variety of ages and skill levels. Join volunteers for the monthly community workday from 8:30-10:30 am at Hoʻōla ʻĀina Pilipili, an accessible community garden at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa’s College of Education. This month’s activities focus on ‘Ike Niu (Coconut Knowledge), featuring workshops by our friends at Niu Now! and UH Mānoaʻs Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Response Team! Come connect with kumu niu and learn about CRB detection and prevention from community experts. Individuals will work 8 am-noon at the Lyon Arboretum with the Grounds Department, where you can assist in landscaping, trail restoration, invasive species removal, and more. Help keep our nearly 200 acres beautiful while receiving hands-on experience in gardening and learning about botany. You must submit an application to participate.

We will be surveying the hiking/biking trails from 9 am-1pm at Pupukea-Paumalu State Park Reserve on the North Shore for the invasive plant devil weed. We will be hand-pulling plants and hiking trails. Trails are easy to moderate and weather can vary; from hot/dry to rainy and muddy. Volunteers should be prepared to hike up to 4 hours at a moderate pace.
